When
a bride wants the “less is more” principle, a single stem bouquet
is a striking addition to her ensemble that makes a statement. These
bouquets have 1 main flower ( a calla lily, rose, lily) with an added
feature. This could be a fancy bow, streamers, an ornately wrapped
stem or a lace collar (for a shorter stem). Often there is some
foliage wired to the stem or sometimes just some extra buds are wired
to the main stem to add interest.
Nosegays
are approximately sixteen to eighteen inches in diameter and are
densely packed with flowers, foliage, and sometimes herbs. You can use
only one type of flower or you can use several
kinds mixed together. You can dress nosegays up or down depending on
the flowers you use and the stem treatment you choose. This makes
them very versatile since you can use them for either a very dressy
occasion or for a casual beach wedding.
Posies
are basically miniature or scaled down nosegays. They are sometimes
used as a substitute for a corsage and are perfect for the small
hands of flower girls. Often smaller flowers are used because the
bouquet is smaller. Flowers such as lily of the valley, grape
hyacinths or spray roses are perfect flowers for posies.
Hand-tied
bouquets are very casual with the just-picked, natural
look. They
suit a garden wedding or a very informal affair. Usually
they have a roundish shape and are designed to show the natural
growth of the stems. The flowers and foliage are arranged and then
wired together or hand-tied. They can be tied with ribbon or raffia
and their stems are left exposed.
Beidermeiers
are very
formal and are essentially large nosegays made up of
rings of flowers. Each ring of flowers is made up of one type or
color of flower. They have a real European flavour and are best for
very dressy, formal weddings.
Arm bouquets have an
old-fashioned look and are best for retro-themed
weddings. They
are made up of long stemmed flowers that rest in the crook of the
bride's arm. They rest naturally across the inner bend of her elbow. A
ribbon or bow is used to hold the bouquet together.
